The Meres of North Shropshire are the second largest network of wetlands in the UK. The Mere at Ellesmere is the largest and most spectacular of these glacially formed ‘lakes’ and now boasts a renowned heronry as well as woodland walks, gardens, ice-creams and pleasure boats in the Summer and a café/restaurant.
Cremorne Gardens at the side of The Mere, the Boathouse and the Mere itself were given to the town for public use in 1953 by the 6th Baron Brownlow who had been involved in the 1936 abdication of Edward Vlll.
