Ellesmere Yard has served this part of Britain’s canal network for over 200 years, a place where engineering excellence and craftsmanship shaped the waterways we know today.

Now, thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the site is entering an exciting new chapter—one that balances its historic significance, operational role, and potential for public access and community use.

Our public consultation is live and we’d love to hear from you! Whether you have a personal connection to the Yard, are passionate about heritage, or simply want to see this historic site thrive, your input will be invaluable.

The Forging Ahead project aims to secure a sustainable future for Ellesmere Yard, ensuring it remains a valued space for heritage, learning, and local enterprise. Our objectives include:

✔️ Conserving the Yard’s historic structures and heritage assets for future generations.

✔️ Developing a sustainable, financially viable site.

✔️ Expanding public access while ensuring the site remains a safe and functional operational yard.

✔️ Supporting the local economy and heritage skills by providing leasable spaces for craft, trade, and enterprise.

✔️ Fostering community engagement, educational initiatives, and volunteering opportunities.

To help shape these plans, we are launching a public consultation, inviting individuals, community groups, and businesses to share their thoughts on how the site can be developed for future generations.

This survey is a core part of our consultation strategy, running over the next several months. Your feedback will directly inform the development of the site’s future use, helping us understand what people value most about Ellesmere Yard and how it can be better integrated into the local and wider canal network, and surrounding communities.
